Where are Maseratis Made?

If you’re in the market for a luxury or performance vehicle, you must have lots of questions about which brand is right for your lifestyle. With a rich history and an unmistakably Italian charm, Maserati has become synonymous with automotive excellence. As you embark on your journey to discover more about this iconic brand, the fundamental question may arise: Where are Maseratis made? Let’s dive into the details and unravel the fascinating narrative behind Maserati’s heritage.

Who Makes Maserati?

Maserati started in the town of Bologna in northern Italy in December of 1914 by five brothers: Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, and Ernesto Maserati. In 1940, the headquarters were relocated to Modena, Italy, an hour outside of Bologna, where it still operates today, making genuine Maserati parts and vehicles. See some Maserati trivia below:

  • The Maserati logo of the trident is a tribute to the famous Fountain of Neptune in the Piazza Maggiore in Bologna. It was designed by Mario Maserati, a brother of the founders who worked as an artist.
  • The Maserati mission is to “build ultra-luxury performance automobiles with timeless Italian style, accommodating bespoke interiors, and effortless, signature-sounding power.”
  • You can visit the Maserati plant in Modena, Italy, which primarily makes models like the GranTurismo, and take an hour-and-a-half guided tour of the showrooms and factory assembly line.
  • Additional manufacturing plants include the Agnelli Plant in Grugliasco, Italy (which primarily makes the Quattroporte and Ghibli) and the Mirafiori Plant in Turin, Italy (which primarily makes the Levante SUV). Both these plants are located about three hours north of Modena, close to the French border.
  • After being owned by a few different parent companies over the decades, it is now owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) as of 1993 and is in a brand group with Alfa Romeo, another Italian luxury car company. FCA is a multi-national Italian/American corporation headquartered in London, UK, and Amsterdam, Netherlands. Since its ownership by FCA, Maserati has steadily grown in the auto industry.
  • Maserati partners include fashion designers like Bulgari and Ermenegildo Zegna, who have a hand in their luxurious interiors, as well as the audio tech company Bowers and Wilkins, who design the premium Maserati sound systems.

But who makes Maserati? The answer to these questions remains constant! Fiat has kept the company’s operational and manufacturing centers in Italy, Maserati’s place of origin, and we believe this is cause for celebration. Regardless of future ownership, we expect that they will continue honoring the racing heritage of the Italian brand.

Maserati Parent Company: Who Owns Maserati?

As we explore Maserati’s ownership journey, we find that the brand has changed hands over the years. Currently, the Maserati parent company is Stellantis, resulting from the merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot SA in 2021. This shift in ownership, however, is part of a dynamic history that includes ownership by the Orsi family and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles:

  • Initially owned by the Maserati brothers, Maserati was sold to the Orsi family in 1937.
  • Fiat Chrysler Automobiles acquired Maserati in 1993 and later sold 50% of its shares to Ferrari in 1997.
  • The current ownership under Stellantis reflects the evolving landscape of the automotive industry.

Who Makes Maserati Engines?

The essence of a Maserati is its engine. Until 2019, Ferrari was instrumental in making Maserati engines. But in 2019, Ferrari decided not to renew its contract with Maserati. This led Maserati to start making its engines in-house, resulting in the groundbreaking Maserati Nettuno engine:

  • Until 2019, Ferrari was the primary supplier of Maserati engines.
  • In 2019, Ferrari decided not to renew its contract with Maserati, prompting the brand to develop in-house engines.
  • The Maserati Nettuno engine, incorporating F1 technologies, signifies a new chapter in engine innovation.
